Captain Marvel, as a comic book character name, refers to one of several fictional characters, listed here in chronological order:

  1. Captain Marvel (DC Comics) is a superhero created by C.C. Beck and Bill Parker; a young boy named Billy Batson who transforms into a man empowered with attributes of various Biblical and mythological figures by saying the word "Shazam!". He was originally published by Fawcett Comics and currently published by DC Comics.
  2. Captain Marvel was the title character in a short-lived title published by Myron Fass' M.F. Comics in 1966, shortly before the Marvel Comics version debuted. He had no genuine connection to the classic Fawcett character, but invoked his powers by shouting the word "SPLIT!" When he did, his android body dissolved into its component head, torso, and limbs, which then operated coordinately. The title remains one of the most derided of the Silver Age.
  3. Captain Marvel (Marvel Comics) is Captain Mar-Vell of the alien Kree race, as published by Marvel Comics.
