Captain Flag
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Captain Flag is a superhero created by MLJ Comics' writer Joe Blair and artist Lin Streeter.
His secret identity is Tom Townsend, the wealthy playboy son of an inventor father. When the villain The Black Hand kidnapped him and his father to torture him to obtain the secret of his latest invention, Tom was unable to stop him. He watched his father murdered for not revealing the secret, and before he too was killed, Tom was rescued by a great eagle that crashed through the window and carried him off.
Training with the eagle's eyerie at the top of the mountain, the healthy environment and hard living made him an elite physical specimen. When the eagle brought him a US flag, he took it on as his namesake, and made a costume out of the flag. He named his animal saviour-turned-sidekick Yank the Eagle, and went on to successfully thwart the Black Hand.
He first appeared in September 1941, in issue #16 of Blue Ribbon Comics. He shared the cover with Mr. Justice until #19 when Captain Flag was the only one to appear on the cover.
He was on until the end of Blue Ribbon Comics in March 1942 with Issue #22.
In 1966 when Archie Comics brought back the old heroes in The Mighty Crusaders, he allied himself with The Web and The Fox to form The Ultra-Men.
