Captain Cosmic

Captain Cosmic was a TV show aired in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1977 to 1982. The show, hosted by Bob Wilkins in the guise of Captain Cosmic would air serials of Japanese superheros. The list of shows includes Star Blazers: Quest for Iscandar, Spectreman, Ultraman, Godzilla, Gamara, Goldar, Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robots, Captain Scarlet, Thunderbirds, and The Space Giants. These serials were shown dubbed in English rather than in Japanese with English subtitles in order to appeal to a wider audience. The show was created in the wake of "Star Wars", capitalizing on the popularity of science fiction.

The character of Captain Cosmic flew around the galaxy in his spaceship with his sidekick 2T2, and was "faster than a speeding BART train" according to the opening sequence. Captain Cosmic would occasionally have guests on the show such as Anthony Daniels.

The show had a fan club with decoder cards. A daily message would be shown that only members with decoder cards would be able to read. The code consisted of a 3-shift alpha replacement. There was also a game called "TV Pow!" where contestants were called on the phone by the station, and they would try an shoot objects in the onscreen video game by yelling 'pow' into the phone.
