Captain Blue

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Captain Blue is a character in the game series Viewtiful Joe by Capcom. He is voiced by Gregg Berger in the games. He is voiced in the Viewtiful Joe anime by Banjō Ginga in the original Japanese, and by the late John Smallberries and later by George C. Cole in the English dub.

[edit] Viewtiful Joe

At first, Captain Blue appears to be an ordinary movie superhero, until Joe gets sucked into the movie. There, an aged Blue (with a gray mustache and a bulging pot belly) gives him his V-Watch and helps him learn the Slow, Mach Speed, and Zoom abilities by fighting Joe in mini-boss battles. After the 2nd level Blue disappears until the end of the game.

There, it is revealed that he is the leader of the JADOW organization, the ones who kidnapped Silvia, and that he is Silvia's father. He transforms into the gigantic monster King Blue, forcing Joe to use Six Majin (his giant robot) to counter-attack. When King Blue is defeated, he returns to normal size and reverts to a younger, fitter form (with a brown mustache and a trim muscular body), and fights Joe alone.

After Joe defeats him again, Captain Blue, snapped out of his evil ways (and returned to his older form), reveals his past. He was a movie director, famous for his superhero movies, but he soon lost popularity. He became happy again when he was transported into one of his movies, becoming the hero Captain Blue. But, as he put it, "the seed of evil" was growing in his heart. He began to lead the JADOW, abandoning his superhero role. However, he doesn't seem to need to come out of retirement, because Joe has taken the mantle of the hero.

However, by beating the game on the hardest difficulty (Ultra V-Rated), Captain Blue becomes playable in his older, pot-bellied form. His story is mostly the same as Joe's, except that he has to save his wife, Ivory (who is presumably Silvia and Goldie's mother). The bosses recognize him as the "heroic" Captain Blue they used to fight in his prime, and not as the leader of Jadow, and the final battle involves him fighting his "dark side" to purge the evil from Movieland and atone for his sins.

As a boss, Captain Blue's powers involve generating electricity auras around his body, slamming into the ground to spread a large wave of electricity outward, the diving "Captain Blue Kick", hovering in the air, and teleportation. His final battle form can also generate lightning columns across the entire screen. King Blue can also generate lightning columns, as well as commanding missile launchers and space ships to shoot at the player. He can also hide in the background, protecting him from most attacks.

As a playable character, Captain Blue shares all of Joe's VFX powers - Slow, Zoom, and Mach Speed - but instead of a double jump, he has a double-height single jump, and he can hover (by pressing and holding the button again) just like his mini-boss form. His special moves are the same, but change names: Captain Blue Kick (instead of Red Hot Kick), Air Blue (instead of Air Joe), and Legend Forever (instead of Viewtiful Forever). As a drawback, when he fights enemies, there are no "skull marks" to indicate whether they will attack high or low (like on Ultra V-Rated itself), forcing the player to recognize enemy movements rather than just watching for the skulls.

His non-henshined form is an old man wearing a golf outfit (hat, shorts, and t-shirt) patterened after the American flag.

[edit] Viewtiful Joe 2

Blue plays a minor role in Viewtiful Joe 2, having been turned into a Rainbow Oscar, the objects the GEDOW are looking for.

[edit] Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble

Captain Blue is a playable character in Red Hot Rumble, as well as being part of the story. The players are fighting for the lead role in Blue's new movie.
