Capercaillie is a Scottish folk band (with a strong Irish influence) founded in the 1980s by Donald Shaw and fronted by Karen Matheson. They recorded their first album, Cascade, in 1984. Their 1992 EP Coisich A Ruin was the first Scottish Gaelic-language record to reach the UK Top 40 singles chart.
The band are based in Scottish but include several members who are either Irish or second-generation Irish immigrants to the UK. They have popularised traditional Gaelic songs and music by using modern production techniques and often mixing musical forms - such as combining traditional lyrics with drum and bass.
