[edit] WikiProject Go

Have you had any responses? You might be interested in WikiProject Board and Table Games. I didn't want to start tagging go-related articles for WPBTG without consulting with you first. ptkfgs 11:41, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, the BTG project was formed pretty recently as far as I know. For the moment, I think the main goals are to identify and tag articles that should be part of the project, and to work on figuring out what the standards should be for various things. ptkfgs 15:56, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Go Seigen entry

I have gone back and put back my edit. There appear to be a few things we do not agree on, but here is my two cents: First of all, the ordering of surname and first name should be along the lines of Asian tradition in order to show proper respect to the individuals whose names are mentioned. Having studied East Asian culture and interacted with quite a number of people native in Korea, Japan, and China, I have found that they all prefer to have their names, when appearing in Western literature, ordered with last names first. It is quite disrespectful to have their given names appear before their last names. If Wikipedia has a particular policy dictates otherwise, well, it is simply WRONG. If you read Japanese or Chinese, which I do, you would find that Japanese and Chinese sections of Wikipedia honor the Western tradition of ordering first and last names (i.e. first names first, last names last). The least we can do is to reciprocate. Second, Go Seigen's affliation should be "honorary member of the Nihon Ki-in", NOT "retired". It does NOT make any sense to state one's affliation as "retired". That is NOT the definition of the word "affliation". Thus, to indicate that Go Seigen is currently retired, it must be assigned to the category of "status". Third, you added that Hashimoto Utaro would go on to found Kansai Kiin in the section listing Go Seigen's jubango opponents. This simply is NOT needed, as the entry focuses on Go Seigen, and should you feel you want to inform readers of Mr. Hasimoto's achievements, it should be added to his respective Wiki entry. Lastly, it is convenient for the readers to have links to the various concepts and names mentioned in the article. This is simply good sense. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by By78 (talkcontribs) .

—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 85.99.170.5 (talk • contribs) .

[edit] Wikiproject Go - templates

“
"I'd also like to suggest the following templates:
  • A name template for Go players, showing the player's name in Kanji, Hangul, or the like, as well as the various romanizations. Have we chosen a standard for the main article on each player?
  • Short biography template for professionals, showing date of birth, date turned pro, date retired, date died, place of birth, affiliations, etc.
  • A promotion history template for each professional, showing year of each promotion (and reason for award, perhaps)
  • A tournament template, indicating which countries and players participate, the general format, the prize money?
  • Succession boxes for the various tournaments to be displayed on the payer pages
  • A table for listing tournaments/titles won by a professional
  • A "Go-related article" stub template

--TheKro 10:09, 18 October 2006 (UTC)"

”
  • A standard hasn't been chosen, but I've created templates for different nationality players that contain Kanji, Hangul, Pinyin, and Traditional/Simplified Chinese names. You can see some examples here - Hideyuki Fujisawa, Lee Chang-ho, Ma Xiaochun.
    • I like what you've done here, but it's not clear which template to use in what situation, especially with

players often changing countries, or born in one, and playing in another. Surely we can have a generic "Go-bio-stub", with the name in each language given? This will be useful also for people searching for info on players in other languages? If we're worried about clutter, we can leave all the oriental forms out, just using name at the top of the article, and then putting the further linguistic details in a "oriental-names-stub" near the bottom of the article?

  • This promotion template sounds good, maybe even filling in awards from magazines, too?
    • Yeah - perhaps awards (and records held) should be in a regular table, and mentioned in the article itself?
  • I've created a tournament template also, as can be seen at Kisei, Judan, Oza etc..
    • Cool - so the work here would be spreading it to other tournaments.
  • This would seem a bit troubling for players such as Ma Xiaochun, Cho Chikun, Lee Chang-ho, and Cho Hunhyun, because frankly, they've won a lot of titles :p
    • Yeah, Charles pointed out it would be good for hereditary titles (Heads of houses, maybe godokoro, etc.). However, for annual titles it may still be doable - some of the royalty out there have quite a lot of titles, but since the succession boxes are at the bottom of the page, it doesn't clog up the main article much.
  • I've done this on every go player page, if I recall correctly.
    • OK. Is the list ad hoc per page, or is the tournament listing order standardised across pages.
  • Seems to be done
    • Yeah - the remaining work here is modifying the other articles not using the stub to actually use it.

could you help me with those templates?

The preceding unsigned comment was added by Erkan1907 (talkcontribs) .
