Canyon Crest Academy (founded 2004) is a public high school of choice in the San Dieguito Unified High School District. Located in Carmel Valley, just down the road from Cathedral Catholic High School and Torrey Pines High School, CCA has a strong focus on technology and the arts. Current enrollment (2006-2007) is around 1400 students, with ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students only. Next year, the school will be complete with a senior class, and enrollment will peak at about 2000. One unique aspect of Canyon Crest is Envision, an arts program with 6 divisions: Digital/Fine arts, Theater, Video/Film, Dance, Vocal Music, and Instrumental Music. The program regularly performs shows and interacts with the North County creative community. The school also has a unique rock band class which has produced bands such as Goolong Fong. Students also have the option of taking classes from Miracosta Community College at the CCA campus, after school. Canyon Crest uses a 4x4 class schedule instead of the more common rotating block schedule, which means that students can complete 8 classes a year, rather than 6. The current student to teacher ratio (overall) is roughly 34:1. This year's API score was the highest in San Diego County. As of 2006, the school principal is Mr. David Jaffe. As decided by a vote of the first student body, the school's colors are red and black, and the mascot is a raven. Although Canyon Crest Academy sponsors many sports teams, there is no football team, and there are no plans to add one.
The Mascot: Canyon Crest Academy's first freshman class (class of 2008) originally voted a black panther as the mascot. However, the mascot was soon changed due to a simliar mascot and school colors within the same school district. And thus, the Canyon Crest Academy Raven, provided with the name "Rupert", by student Yael Kent, was born. The Raven logo was originally illustrated by student Gary Kallenberg. Once a week, the Associated Student Body at Canyon Crest rewards the second-period class with the most school spirit a raven puppet. Traditionally, this raven is kidnapped by an English class each spring. This was begun by Mr. Black in 2005 and continued by Mrs. Duncan in 2006.
