Canton Road

Canton Road (Traditional Chinese: 廣東道) is a road linking the former west reclamation shore in Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok of Kowloon. The road starts from the junction with Salisbury Road and ends at the junction with Lai Chi Kok Road.

The road was elongated from the section in Tsim Sha Tsui. In course of urban development, that sections of road were used for other constructions made the road disjointed.

[edit] Name

The road was originally named as MacDonnell Road. To avoid confusion with MacDonnell Road on the Hong Kong Island, its name changed to Canton Road. The roads in the area were mainly named after cities of China and Vietnam. The translator of Canton Road misintrepreted Canton as Guangdong (廣東) instead of the city of Canton (廣州). Canton road contains many shops and is usually very lively from morning all the way to night. Places include the Harbour City, Marco Polo Prince hotel, Marco Polo Gateway, clothes shops, many resturaunts etc...

It was proposed that a station Canton Road of West Rail extension, Kowloon Southern Link, could be built beneath Tsim Sha Tsui section of the road, outside Harbour City. The plan was put off after unsuccessful negotiation between KCRC and The Wharf on financial arrangement. But, another station West Kowloon at the junction of Canton Road and Wui Cheung Road in Kwun Chung is under-construction.
