Caneira

Marco António Simões Caneira (born 9 February 1979) in Sintra, Portugal , usually known simply as Caneira (pron. IPA: [kɐ'nɐiɾɐ]), is an international Portuguese football defender.

He is loan to Sporting from Valencia. He has previously played for Sporting, SL Benfica, Bordeaux and Valencia, and other teams. He was selected for the national team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Marco Caneira began his career at Sporting Clube de Portugal youth, where he gratuated and moved up to the senior Squad. But as soon as he joined Caneira went on loan to SC Beira-Mar where after a good season he signed with Reggina Calcio. There, he attracted teams such as AC Milan but it was his childhood team SL Benfica that signed him which left many Sporting fans calling him a traitor, ironically his stay at Benfica went sour after very poor showings. Caneira then left for Ligue 1 action French giants Football Club des Girondins de Bordeaux where he was very successful. Caneira then left for Valencia CF after his great showings in France. But after two season he showed interest to come back to Portugal despite being one of Valencia's best defenders. He then signed a loan contract valid for 3 years with Sporting where Sporting fans have forgave him for his move to SL Benfica after good exhibitions, including a great goal against Inter Milan in the 06/07 Champions League. He is also known for playing as a central defender, and also as right or left back, playing well in all positions, making him a valuable player in Sporting's squad.
