Regional profile
This region had traditionally been a mixed bag and a bellwether region. However, with the large proportion of immigrants in the region and the urban growth and densification, recently it has become the Liberals' power base and a strongly liberal area. Liberal candidates have won every seat in every election by a landslide in most cases, making this region to the Liberals what Rural Alberta is to the Conservatives. The strongest results for the Liberals are along the northern boundary north of Highway 401 where they have consistently beat their closest opponents by 3-1, 4-1, even 5-1 margins. Like all of the city of Toronto and most of the urban Greater Toronto Area, the Conservatives are fairly weak here, and the New Democratic Party (NDP) have some pockets of support, but they are few and far between.
