Regional profile

Traditionally this region had been quite conservative, however, the rapid growth of the Greater Toronto Area and a high immigrant population (particularly in York Region) and much more urban and affluent population has made most of this region a Liberal stronghold, similar to the outer parts of the City of Toronto. In 2004, the Liberals easily held onto most of the seats with the exception of Oshawa, where the Conservatives squeaked out the seat in an extremely competitive 3-way race. The Conservatives picked up another seat in the 2006 election. This was in Whitby-Oshawa, where popular MPP Jim Flaherty ran fairly in the riding which has a large rural component. Oshawa is a very competitive 3-way race, which is trending Conservative. This is the strongest area in the region for the New Democratic Party (NDP) whom are very weak in the rest of the region.
