Campeonato Brasileiro 2006
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
2006 will see the 36th edition of the Brazilian national championship. The tournament has three divisions: Série A (first), Série B (second), and Série C (third).
[edit] Série A
The format of the tournament is similar to the 2005 edition, though fielding two fewer teams. 20 teams will compete, each team playing the other in a home-and-away format. At the season finale, the team with the most accumulated points (3 for each win, 1 for a draw, none for a loss) will be declared champion. Teams ranked first to fourth (or fifth, if the Libertadores 2006 champion finishes among the top four) will qualify to the Libertadores, whereas teams in the seven following positions will join the national champion to participate in the Copa Sudamericana. The four bottom teams in the standings will be relegated to the Série B. The champion this year was São Paulo Futebol Clube.
[edit] Série B
The Série B is contested by 20 teams and follows the same format of the Série A. Four teams are promoted and four relegated to the Série C.
[edit] Série C
The Série C is contested by 63 teams divided in regional groups. Four teams are promoted to the Série B. There is no relegation.
