Campbell is a city in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,460 at the 2000 census. The city's name is generally pronounced "camel" (with a silent "B") by local residents, however it is properly pronounced Camp- Bell. The city has also been nicknamed Soup City. Campbell is served by a branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Campbell was formerly known as East Youngstown, Ohio, and this designation still appears on real estate deeds for the city.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.7 km² (3.7 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 9,460 people, 3,729 households, and 2,602 families residing in the city. The population density was 979.2/km² (2,536.8/mi²). There were 4,099 housing units at an average density of 424.3/km² (1,099.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 77.21% White, 16.69% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 3.48% from other races, and 2.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.97% of the population.

Campbell is home to the majority of Youngstown's Greek-American population, including other middle-class ethnic Americans such as: Croatians, Czechs, Italians, Puerto Ricans, and Slovaks.

There were 3,729 households out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.9% were married couples living together, 18.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,803, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $33,558 versus $20,121 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,981. About 16.1% of families and 18.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
