Camp Wah-Nee
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Camp Wah-Nee is a coeducation sleepaway camp located in Torrington, Connecticut. The camp is over seventy years old and as gone through a series of owners; most notably the Gordon Family until 1993. In that year, Dave & Donna Stricker and Mark & Meryl Transport purchased Wah-Nee from the Gordon family. The two couples owned the camp until shortly before the 2006 season, when the two severed ties, leaving the Strickers as sole owners of the camp. The camp is primarily run by Harvey Mandell (Director/Boys Head Counselor), Hal Rosen (Director/Head of Waterfront) and Frayda Jay (Girls Head Counselor). There is also an athletic director for each gender; Peter Sale for the boys and Jordanna Dopazo. The official camp colors are red and white. The campers are split up into groups, "Divisions," by their age. The youngest are those enterting 4th Grade [Boys/Girls (Freshman/Angels, Sophomore 1s/Demons, Sophomore 2s/Comets, Inters/Jets, Juniors/Fantastics "Fannies," Senior 1s/Lodge 1, Senior 2s/Lodge 2, Super Seniors/Mini Lodge)]. Entering 11th grade, campers become Waitrons. The Waitrons serve the camp in their dining hall known as "Conyers' Hall" in recognition of Jimmy Conyers, the head cook at Wah-Nee and also it's longest returner. When returners are entering their freshman year of college, they are eligible to become full counselors. Those who return to Wah-Nee year-after-year are known as "Wah-Neeites." The camp rests on a man-man pond known politically as Park Pond, though as far as Wah-Nee is concerend it is "Shadow Lake." The camp motto is 10-for-2, meaning we wait 10 long months just for the 2 we spend at camp. The official alma mater is called "In Dreams". The camp indoor gym, the Gordon Garden, was intentionally burnt down before the summer of 2005. Plans to build a new gym for 2006 were delayed and the new gym is promised for 2007.The biggest tournament of the summer is the basketball tournament "Jack D. Gordon" in which the whole camp attends and watches the games.
