Camino de ronda

Camino de Ronda was a path built along the Costa Brava coast for the Guardia Civil to control the coast to stop smuggling.

The origins are located in 19th Century when it was formed by small footpath through the cliffs and along the coast of Catalonia to control the local population. In the 20th Century, especially in the postwar period, the path acquired a great importance serving a control of the boarder especially in the terrible conditions in Spain after the Spanish civil war.

However corruption ensured the route was not closed to smuggling. The economic conditions of the 40’s and 50’s allowed the few smugglers to amass fortunes while even basic foods, tools and other products were in short supply in Spain. The economic development of Spain and eventual entry into the European Union ensured the path lost it’s importance. The route is now a series of public paths often connecting tourist beaches and resorts.
