Camilla is a city in Mitchell County, Georgia, and is its county seatGR6. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,669.

In the 2000s, the city became known for being hit by two disastrous sets of tornadoes, both occurring in the dark hours of the early morning and both going through roughly the same area. The first outbeak was in 2000 on February 14, the second outbreak was in 2003 on March 20.

Camilla is located at 31°13′49″N, 84°12′33″W (31.230243, -84.209102)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.8 km² (6.1 mi²). 15.8 km² (6.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.16% is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,669 people, 1,994 households, and 1,405 families residing in the city. The population density was 358.8/km² (929.4/mi²). There were 2,128 housing units at an average density of 134.7/km² (348.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 32.30% White, 65.23% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.25% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.20% of the population.

There were 1,994 households out of which 34.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.5% were married couples living together, 33.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% were non-families. 26.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.32.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 81.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $22,485, and the median income for a family was $24,232. Males had a median income of $23,581 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,117. About 34.3% of families and 37.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 54.9% of those under age 18 and 20.0% of those age 65 or over.

The Mitchell County School system serves Camilla students, however, some students also attend nearby Pelham Schools or Baconton Charter School.

Westwood Schools is the local private school.
