Cambridge University Constabulary

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cambridge University Constabulary is a very small, specialised, non-Home Office police force based around the precincts of the University of Cambridge. There are approximately 20 to 30 constables in the Constabulary at any one time.

As a non-Home Office police service, the powers of the constables derive from the Universities Act 1825, which states that the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of the University have the power to appoint constables. The Act states that these officers will have all the powers of a constable whilst within their jurisdiction. The jurisdiction of these constables extends within a five mile radius of Great St Mary's Church.

Generally the constables restrict themselves to internal university matters with all serious crime/incidents being referred to the Cambridgeshire Constabulary, who are responsible for the whole of Cambridgeshire.
