Cambridge Common

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cambridge Common is a large public park in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. It is located right by Harvard Square and Harvard University. Of historical significance, General George Washington first gathered his troops here during the American Revolutionary War. The tree under which they gathered still stands, and it is marked by a commemorative plaque and a pair of bronze cannons to mark the spot.

Cambridge Common is also the site of the Irish Famine Memorial, dedicated on July 23, 1997 by then President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, and unveiled to an audience of 3,000 people. The Memorial sculpture was created by Maurice Harron, a sculptor from Derry, Northern Ireland.

In 2005, a progressive weblog by the same name was launched by Andrew Golis at Harvard University. The site, at www.cambridgecommon.com, covers a wide range of topics ranging from campus debates to international affairs, and was one of the earliest sources to break the news of Larry Summers' resignation as president of Harvard University.
