I'm currently working on clearing the main categories of every country in the world. I've done more than 140 countries so far (and I am going to brace myself to tackle the minefield of the multiple China menus one day).
Checklist of standard top tier categories in national menus which I am using:
Subject categories
- Archaeology
- Architecture
- Cities
- Communications
- Counties/states/provinces etc (whichever are being used for local sub-categorisation; the others in subdivisions or geography).
- Culture
- Economy
- Education
- Environment (or conservation if there is nothing else to go in an environment category)
- Geography
- Government
- Health or healthcare
- History
- Law
- Media
- Military (or in government if there is only one article)
- Monarchy (current monarchies only and only if there are lots of articles)
- Organisations
- People
- Politics
- Religion
- Science and technology
- Society
- Sport
- Tourism
- Towns (only if there are many or they are being used for local subcategorisation; otherwise in geography)
- Transport(ation)
- Villages (only if there are many, which is rare; otherwise in geography)
Also: overseas territories if any, or a category for them if there are several.
