I'm currently working on clearing the main categories of every country in the world. I've done more than 140 countries so far (and I am going to brace myself to tackle the minefield of the multiple China menus one day).

Checklist of standard top tier categories in national menus which I am using:
Subject categories

  • Archaeology
  • Architecture
  • Cities
  • Communications
  • Counties/states/provinces etc (whichever are being used for local sub-categorisation; the others in subdivisions or geography).
  • Culture
  • Economy
  • Education
  • Environment (or conservation if there is nothing else to go in an environment category)
  • Geography
  • Government
  • Health or healthcare
  • History
  • Law
  • Media
  • Military (or in government if there is only one article)
  • Monarchy (current monarchies only and only if there are lots of articles)
  • Organisations
  • People
  • Politics
  • Religion
  • Science and technology
  • Society
  • Sport
  • Tourism
  • Towns (only if there are many or they are being used for local subcategorisation; otherwise in geography)
  • Transport(ation)
  • Villages (only if there are many, which is rare; otherwise in geography)

Also: overseas territories if any, or a category for them if there are several.
