Portal talk:California Central Valley

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This talk page is for the Portal about California Central Valley. Ensure this portal's details are listed in the Portal directory.
For discussion about Portals generally, please see the WikiProject on Portals.

People commonly associate California with beaches and cosmopolitan areas. In truth, there is an enormous and important region that receives little attention, and that is the Central Valley. There are more than enough areas and topics and significant historic and current events to make this a valuable portal.

Specifically, I'd like to focus on:

  • Farming, farmworkers and agriculture in general.
  • Ecological issues, especially land use, water rights and pollution.
  • Social issues (Such as the conservative high unemployment, drug use and teen pregnancy)
  • Natural resources (I intend to include articles on the Sierras)
  • Immigration
  • The seeming dichotomy between the Central Valley and the rest of California, wherein the Central Valley is more conservative than what is commonly associated with California.

I'd love help from anyone who thinks this is worthwhile. Elijahmeeks 18:39, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Colleges and Universities

Are we including community colleges? Rayana fazli 04:45, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

We have to be careful not to clutter up the page. I think that, ultimately, the best system would be to say:
"The University of California system, which includes X"
"The California State University system, which includes Y"
"Private Universities such as Z"
"Community colleges such as Q"
Wherein X, Y, Z, and Q are changed periodically. The box for universities and colleges is already quite large. Elijahmeeks 05:13, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

When I was reading your list of universities, I was thinking that it should be grouped into the way you had just mentioned. I'll find out about the community colleges in the Central Valley, unless you have already done so. Rayana fazli 05:26, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

I've updated it. If this style is acceptable, I'd recommend coming up with a schedule of when to change the list, say once a week to start. If it doesn't work, then feel free to revert. Elijahmeeks 06:02, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

I think once a week sounds good. What happens when we go thorugh all the universites and colleges? I might be looking too ahead. And who gets to choose which university/college goes up? Rayana fazli 18:50, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Why did you use "independent universities" instead of private universites? Rayana fazli 20:00, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Because the Alliant International University article refers to itself as an 'independent university' and not a 'private university'. I don't know if there are accepted differences between independent or private and I have no preference for either. As to which university/college to put next, I would simply say alphabetical order and start back from the top when we run out. Elijahmeeks 02:21, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

I suggest we should say "The California Community College system, which includes X." There is a list of CCC's but we are going to have to pick out specifically the ones that are in the Central Valley CCC. For the UC's and CSU's, putting them in alphabetical order is very simple. For independant/private, and community colleges will be a tad bit more diffficult because there are more of those colleges and universites then the UC and CSU and they are not on one list. Do you still think we should put in alphabetical order for the indie and community colleges? Rayana fazli 04:05, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Central Valley News

I was looking at some other portals and quite a few of them had a "current events" section. I think it would be a good idea to add this section. Rayana fazli 05:22, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

It's in. I removed it because I could find no news articles on Wikinews that were related to the Central Valley. I've changed the name to "Current Events" so that we have a little more latitude in what we can post there. Elijahmeeks 05:55, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

No Wikinews articles? That's ridiculous, I am now determened to add some current event articles about the Central Valley to Wikinews. No wonder everyone (and by everyone I mean a lot of people who are not from California), forget that there is a Central Valley. Rayana fazli 06:06, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

I added another current event story but I am thinking it might be too long. We can shorten it up and I can write a normal length article on the topic in Wikinews and just link to it from the Portal. With other news should I do the same? I'll write a quite sentence or so on what the story is and then I'll write a normal length one on Wikinews, or should I just stick to how it is now? Rayana fazli 17:33, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New page for old selections

I added Portal:Central Valley/Previous Selections as a location for articles/current events/biographies/et cetera when they are replaced with something new. Elijahmeeks 18:33, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Changing the Counties section

I think that Counties would be more appealing if it resembled the Colleges and Universities section. We can have four rotating counties and point to a location from the List of California Historical Landmarks. I'll demonstrate to see how it looks. Elijahmeeks 18:36, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

I perfer the new way that you put together the county list and it does look more appealing. The other way made a lackluster County section. Rayana fazli 04:08, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Changes

How often should we change the "historical places" and "things you can do" section? I have a few historical places that we can post up and a bunch of "things to do" in the Central Valley. I suggest that because we are just starting and we only have like three people working on this portal and that there are not as many articles about the Central Valley as lets say... the United States Portal, we shouldn't change it more than once a day like Portal: United States does. Rayana fazli 20:54, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

This is still an unfinished Portal, and by making mock changes, we're establishing the procedure to do so. I would prefer, once this is considered finished, that we change any articles no more than once every 24 hours and no less than once a week. Elijahmeeks 02:18, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

What do you mean "mock changes?" No more than once a day and no less than once a week sounds fine by me. I added the "did you know" thing, was that ok? Is that what you mean by "mock changes?" Rayana fazli 03:16, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Things you can do

Hey Elijah, did you delete the 'things you can do section?" If so, why? Rayana fazli 04:36, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I did. The actual purpose, I've discovered, of such a section is to direct collaboration on a related article. That's covered by Noticeable Stubs and Requested Articles, it is really redundant. Historic Places should cover any information that may have been put in Things You Can Do (And, if you'll notice, that's where I'd found my first four 'things' to do.). Elijahmeeks 05:12, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Future Selections

Hey Elijah, are you going to put a future selections section so we can put what we are going to put on the Portal before actually putting it on the Portal? If so, won't it be pointless if everyone can see what we are going to put on the Portal before we actually get a chance to put it on the Portal? It shouldn't be open to the general wikipedia public untill we are sure of what were are adding. Then again, I don't know how other Portals do it so if it works for them, then I guess it can work for us. And now that I think about it, what if someone else wants to add something to the Portal, if the future selections section is only known to us, then what would they do? There has to be a way to allow people to put what they are going to add to the Portal so we can check it for mistakes or whatever, and still make it so everyone doesn't see it untill we are done..... I have a pretty good idea, but I want to hear from you first. Rayana fazli 16:33, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I already have. On the Previous Selections are suggestions for future selections. As things get finalized, this will be the location and schedule for changes to the portal. And no, this doesn't 'ruin it' for the general public, because we're all the general public. This is the same way that Wikipedia's Featured Article of the Day works (If you look at the list, you'll be able to see the featured articles two weeks out) and that seems to be doing a-okay. Elijahmeeks 19:27, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

I did not see that on the Wikipedia's Featured Article of the Day mainly because I haven't looked. I guess if it works, then it works. Next time I add something, I'll put it on the future selections page. Rayana fazli 20:16, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Name of the Portal

Are we sticking with the California Central Valey instead of The Central Valey? Rayana fazli 18:48, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

I'll take that as a yes. Rayana fazli 22:39, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Updating the Portal

It seems that this portal has not been updated in while. I have a few pictures we can use and some new quotes. Do you want me to put them on the Portal because it seems that no one is adding anything? Rayana fazli 19:02, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

You don't need my permission to update the portal. Anyone can do so, and I'll continue to do so--though not with the frequency, of course, that I did so when I was fashioning it. Elijahmeeks 19:15, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] CA-geo-stub sub-types proposed

There's a discussion here about how best to (further) split up the Cat:California geography stubs. Ideally, we'd do this by generally-recognised regions consisting of a readily-identifiable list of whole counties, such that there's at least 60 existing stubs in each (but not so many as to mean we're likely to be doing the same thing again before too long). Comments welcome. Alai 00:41, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
