Calvary Baptist Academy (Shreveport, Louisiana)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Calvary Baptist Academy is a K-12th grade, private Baptist school located on Linwood Avenue in south Shreveport, Louisiana. The mission statement of Calvary is "To glorify our Lord in a Christ-centered, Bible-focused educational environment in which to provide a quality college-preparatory education."

Founded by W.D. "Step" Martin in 1969 as a ministry of Calvary Baptist Church, Calvary graduated over 200 students to post-secondary success from 1969 through 1987. But due to the rising popularity of other schools' magnet programs in the 1980's, Calvary was forced to close their high school program. However, in 2003, Calvary Baptist's Senior Pastor and the school's Board President, Rick Edmonds, petitioned the staff of CBA to begin reinstating the high school grades one by one every year. Interest in the school skyrocketed, the original plan was amended, and all grades were installed in the 2004-2005 school year with the experience of Calvary Superintendent Ed Hearron.

Calvary has become one of the fastest growing schools in Louisiana. Offering the A Beka curriculum at every level, CBA students score 1 1/2 years above average on the Standford Achievement Test. As of 2005, the school's total enrollment sat at 893. CBA offers a plethora of activities and athletic opportunities. Also, weekly chapel services are held in the newly remodeled sanctuary.

In addition, in July of 2005, Calvary Baptist was accepted into the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. The Cavaliers have already had success in their short history of play in Louisiana district 1-1A. In a district of very established teams (such as Evangel Christian, Haynesville, and Logansport), the "Cavs" have proven themselves noteworthy for a first-year program under the leadership of Coach Doug Pederson in football, Coach Lindsey Miller in softball, Coach Chan Hearron in basketball, Coach Matt Merry in track, and Rodney Traweek in baseball. (Rodney L. Chandler, local broadcaster and Calvary play-by-play announcer runs a fan website located in the links, also, a weekly program for Cavalier Athletics can be seen on KMSS- FOX 33 on Thursday mornings at 7:00.)
