Callicoon (town), New York

Callicoon is a town in Sullivan County, New York, USA. The population was 3,052 at the 2000 census.

The Town of Callicoon is in the western part of the county (A hamlet called Callicoon is not in this town but is in the adjacent Town of Delaware).

The town was formed in 1842 from the Town of Liberty. The original spelling of the name was "Collikoon." Part of the town was given over to form the Town of Fremont in 1851.

Callicoon Creek, which flows through the town, was once called "Beaverkill Creek."

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 126.9 km² (49.0 mi²). 126.0 km² (48.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (0.69%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,052 people, 1,222 households, and 811 families residing in the town. The population density was 24.2/km² (62.7/mi²). There were 1,797 housing units at an average density of 14.3/km² (36.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.81% White, 0.75% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 1.15% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.55% of the population.

There were 1,222 households out of which 29.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $38,811, and the median income for a family was $46,645. Males had a median income of $34,524 versus $24,185 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,272. About 6.8% of families and 10.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.3% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.

  • Callicoon Center -- A hamlet in the north part of the town at the junction of Routes 122 and 125. This community was originally called Thurmansville.
  • Jeffersonville -- The Village of Jeffersonville.
  • North Branch -- A hamlet on the north branch of the Callicoon Creek and Route 122.
  • Youngsville -- A hamlet in the eastern part of the town.
