[edit] Route descripton
It presently has three distinct segments:
- The western freeway segment serves as the easternmost portion of the Foothill Freeway. It begins at the east end of Interstate 210 in San Dimas (very near the beginning of the surface street segment), extends eastward, eventually paralleling Highland Avenue, and ends at the intersection of Highland Avenue (the aforementioned surface street segment) and Sierra Avenue in Fontana. This segment had been planned since the 1970s (if not earlier) and was constructed in 2002. It joins Interstate 15, an artery between Southern California and Nevada.
- The surface street segment begins in Fontana where the western freeway segment ends. It continues eastward on Highland Avenue and ends at Interstate 215 in San Bernardino, just after the beginning of the eastern freeway segment (see below). This segment is still signed as CA-30.
- The eastern freeway segment begins at Highland Avenue in San Bernardino (see surface street segment above) halfway between California Street and Medical Center Drive, a few blocks west of Interstate 215), extends eastward to junctions with Interstate 215, State Route 259, State Route 18 and State Route 330 in Highland. State Route 210 then curves southward and ends in a junction with Interstate 10 in Redlands. This segment is signed as CA-30.
A central freeway segment, bypassing the surface street segment described above, is slated for completion in 2007. Once competed, I-210/State Route 210 will be a contiguous freeway from Interstate 5 in San Fernando to Interstate 10 in Redlands. It is expected that further application will be made to AASHTO for designation of the entire route as an Interstate once the last freeway portion is completed.
[edit] History
The western freeway segment replaced the western surface street segment which begins with Base Line Road (sometimes spelled Baseline Road) at its intersection with Foothill Boulevard in San Dimas and extends eastward into Upland. In Upland it becomes 16th Street, then turns northward onto Mountain Avenue, then turns eastward onto 19th Street. It leaves Upland and continues eastward into Rancho Cucamonga. It then seems to turn northward onto Haven Avenue and end at the western freeway segment (see below). This segment is probably still signed as CA-30 -- at least in some places if not ubiquitously -- but some recently published maps are reflecting a signage change.
Route 30 is the former designation of State Route 210 and State Route 330. Route 30 ran from its interchange with the Foothill Freeway, I-210 at the Glendora Curve east to State Route 18 at Big Bear Lake, California. The easternmost portion of Route 30 was transferred to Route 330 in 1972. Thereafter, Route 30 was routed south to I-10 in Redlands, California. In 1999 the entirety of Route 30 from the Glendora Curve to Redlands was transferred to Route 210. The freeway portion of former Route 30 from I-215 to I-10 and portions of Highland Avenue in the cities of San Bernardino and Rialto are still signed as Route 30.
