California State Route 204 is a state highway in the Bakersfield, California, United States area, forming the state-maintained part of State Route 99 Business. It begins at the intersection of California State Route 58 and Union Avenue. It then heads north along Union until intersecting Golden State Avenue, where it angles northwest until it meets California State Route 99 near Meadows Field Airport. The entire route was once U.S. Route 99 before its decommissioning in the 1964 renumbering. (The new alignment of US 99/SR 99 around Bakersfield opened ca. 1964.[1]) The portion of SR 204 north of Bakersfield is constructed to freeway standards, with an interchange at Airport Drive.
Until 1978, SR 204 continued south on Union Avenue past SR 58, crossing SR 223, to rejoin SR 99 south of Bakersfield; this is still SR 99 Business.[2] The intersection with Taft Highway, which carries SR 119 west of SR 99, is the former north end of U.S. Route 399.
