California Institution for Men

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The California Institution for Men (CIM), sometimes referred to simply as "Chino", is a male-only state prison in Chino, California, USA.

Located in San Bernardino County in the city of Chino, CIM opened in 1941 on a 2,500-acre site, making the facility California's fourth oldest state prison (after San Quentin State Prison, Folsom State Prison and the California Correctional Institution at Tehachapi). As of 2005, it housed nearly 6,300 minimum to medium custody prisoners.[1]

CIM operates a "Reception Center" for parole violators which receives and processes felons from several Southern California counties who have violated their parole conditions prior to transfer to other prisons, making Chino a first stop for violators. The largest minimum-security "Level I" facility in the California state prison system is also located at CIM, and houses over 2,300 inmates as of 2006. CIM also operates a 24-hour acute care inpatient hospital including a 189 bed HIV ward.[1]
