California's Fifth Congressional District currently covers Sacramento, California and the surrounding area.

Before the 1992 redistricting, the fifth district covered San Francisco, California, now the 8th district.

It is currently represented by Democrat Doris Matsui.

[edit] 2005 Special Election

In the special election held on March 8, 2005 to fill the vacant seat, Matsui's widow, Doris, won the seat with more than 68% of the vote. She was sworn in on March 10, 2005.
