Calgary Public Library
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Calgary Public Library is a public library service that is provided by the municipality of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was established in 1912 and was the first public library in Alberta.
The city's first library was built on a five-acre patch of scrubland located at the corner of 2nd Street and 12th Avenue S.W. in the Beltline district. The structure, designed by Boston architects McLean & Wright and built out of local yellow Paskapoo sandstone, was largely financed by a Carnegie library grant. In 1929 the formal Victorian-style park was renamed Memorial Park in honour of those who had died during the Great War. The city's cenotaph sits in the park close to the library building, which now houses the Memorial Park Branch Library. It is the city's smallest branch library.
