Calgary Feminists Association

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Calgary Feminists Association is relatively new organization that aims to enhance understanding of women's issues and the related theory within in the Calgary area. Formed in 1998, the group has worked against the patriarchal tendencies of the business-dominated local area. Jenny Fitz is the group's founder and current chairperson.

The organization has been the subject of moderate controversy regarding their application of postmodernism toward their work. The popularity of conservative politics within the region is generally hostile towards new ideas. This attitude is illustrated at its extreme by local business leader Ken Tellstone's controversial statement that "feminism is a self-esteem exercise for the most useless women" [1]. This statement was later retracted in response to strong public backlash, and Tellstone apologized.

The CFA's current projects include a sociological study regarding equal employment opportunities in the downtown area, and educational campaigns in favor of a woman's right to power over her reproductive systems.
