Club Atlético Peñarol is a traditional football team in Montevideo, Uruguay. Peñarol as such was officially named on December 13th, 1913 by former members of the English "Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club" (CURCC). CURCC itself was founded on September 28, 1891.

Peñarol is named after its home neighborhood, which in turn takes its name from the town of Pinerolo, Italy. Peñarol's colors, yellow and black, derive from the colors used in railway signs and barriers.

[edit] Foundation date controversy

Peñarol claims to be the heir of the older club, CURCC, therefore laying claims to being the oldest club in Uruguay. This is contested by some, especially its rival Club Nacional de Football, who claim CURCC and Peñarol were two different clubs.

[edit] National competitions

  • Uruguayan Primera División
    • Amateur Era (4): 1918, 1921, 1925(1), 1926(2), 1928, 1929
      (1) The Uruguayan Football Association does not recognise the 1925 tournament as a Uruguayan Championship, because it was not finished due to internal differences in uruguayan soccer.
      2) The "Consejo Provisorio" championship played in 1926 is not recognised by the Uruguayan Football Association as a Uruguayan Championship.
      • Peñarol is positioned in 3rd place in the rank of the Amateur Era, but, if we consider CURCC which won the competition in five times (1900, 1901, 1905, 1907, 1911), Peñarol is placed 1st.
      • CURCC was the first winner of the competition.
