Byzantine scale

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Byzantine scale denotes the eight modes or tones derived from Ancient Greek usage. These included the Lydian, Myxolydian, Ionian, Dorian, Aeolian, Phrygian, Hypophrygian, and Locrian. But the Seljuk Turks' influence in moulding the scale cannot be ruled out.

Music was very important during the Classical Greek Period and was a crucial part of philosophical training (ie. mind, body and soul) amongs most schools of philosophy. One could even be denied entry to a philosophical school if they were found to be musically handicapped.
