moved this section which was claimed to require rewording to conform to NPOV, from article, should be discussed on talk page:

There is a problem of unemployment in Byron Bay and its surrounding districts. This may be due to employers hiring back-packers, and offering board or little cash for their work. It is felt that governments fail to enforce the relevant employment laws.
Residents of Byron Bay pay high annual rates to the largely inactive local council which has a 20 million-dollar debt. Road conditions, state schools are all overlooked by the so called community spirit.
The large tourism revenue generated by the town is not re-invested back into the community.
The large migration of Sydney and Melbourne residents to Byron Bay has changed the face of the town forever. Business people see Byron Bay as a quick money-making town, thus attracting those who wish to get quick profits. The strong local resistance to these types often drive such businesses out. Some businesses survive by exploiting their staff.
Local powerbrokers have secured a large income by establishing businesses throughout the district, and blocking any proposed developments by playing on the local community's passion for wildlife preservation. Thus a proposed Club Med has failed, and further prime property developments have been blocked by this monopolisation of the tourist dollar.

[edit] Inconsistent

Is it not also POV to say "there is a very(?!?!) strong community feel in Byron Bay..."?. Evidence, anyone? Oh, and also, don't delete my entry only to then paraphrase it ok?

You're right that the statement should be backed up by elaboration, but it's not a contentious point of view in the same manner as stating that the a local council is corrupt, as someone did previously in this article. I'm not from Byron Bay, so I'll leave it up to someone with more local knowledge. --NormanEinstein 13:12, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vandal?

Possible vandal added content" The town has a laid back and friendly atmosphere where recreational drug use is accepted and a part of town life. "

Maybe a bit on the POV side, but not vandalism. The area around Byron Bay has quite a decent population of hippies, New Age people, ect. (see Nimbin, New South Wales) The police seem to turn a blind eye on soft drugs. --BadSeed 16:38, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

The question to be asked is; who accepts recreational drug use? Unless references can be cited (ie. surveys), I'd say it's POV. Cnwb 00:38, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
I didn't say it wasn't POV, I said it wasn't WP:Vandalism. I looked around a bit, didn't quite find an independent survey of attitudes to drugs in Byron Bay, as opposed to the rest of Australia, just some indicators of sizable popular [1] and parliamentary [2],[3] protest at what is seen as an attempt by police to crack down on casual marijuana users (my mistake). I know these aren't crystal clear references, but what the user is in effect saying is that an area which in known throughout Australia as a haven for dope-smokers has a relaxed attitude towards dope-smoking. If you really take issue with it then go ahead and get rid of it. I personally don't think the matter is important or contentious enough to really bother. --BadSeed 01:58, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

I live in Byron ay. This line is not true "recreational drug use is accepted and a part of town life." Its NIMBIN that has a pot festival, not Byron, there are drugs here, like in all towns, but its noting like accepted and part of town life. You could visit our town, and never see anyone smoking or otherwise taking drugs, and you'd not find a dealer either.
