Buxton is a town in York County, Maine, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,452. The town was settled in 1748 and incorporated in 1772

Buxton is comprised of four villages: Salmon Falls, Bar Mills, West Buxton, and Buxton Center. The town was named by its first minister, Reverend Paul Coffin for his former town of Buxton, England. Before that it had been known as Narragansett. The site of the town was once used as a garrison during the war against the Narragansett Indians. An attempt to settle the area was not made until 1750 when several men and their families commenced a permanent settlement in Salmon Falls. Its first school house was established by Reverend Silas Moody in 1761.

- John Brewster Jr. (1766-1854), an itinerant artist, despite being deaf and mute, who settled in Buxton after 1805 (with interruptions) to live with his physician brother, Dr. Royal Brewster, and his brother's family.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 106.7 km² (41.2 mi²). 104.9 km² (40.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.70% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 7,452 people, 2,804 households, and 2,094 families residing in the town. The population density was 71.1/km² (184.0/mi²). There were 2,930 housing units at an average density of 27.9/km² (72.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.83% White, 0.42% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.55% of the population.
There were 2,804 households out of which 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% were non-families. 18.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the town the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 33.1% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $48,958, and the median income for a family was $52,845. Males had a median income of $35,628 versus $27,400 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,179. About 3.2% of families and 6.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.1% of those under age 18 and 16.5% of those age 65 or over.
