Butt of Lewis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Butt of Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Rubha Robhanais) is in the area of Ness. It is the northernmost point of the Isle of Lewis. It is the location for a lighthouse built in the 1860's and designed by David Stevenson. There is also a differential GPS base station on a nearby hill.
There is a sheltered cove called Stoth on the road up to the lighthouse. Lazy beds are visible on the other side of the road. There is a large round hole in the cliff to the west of the lighthouse which is called the Eye of the Butt (Scottish Gaelic: Toul a' Roigh), which is most clearly visible from the Habost machair.
