In Colonial Africa the bush telegraph is virtually synonymous with The grapevine in communication and management context. In 2006 'The Bush Telegraph was launched by a number of South African Wikipedians to communicate news and issues relating to Wiki projects Gregorydavid 06:23, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

What you mean is "grapevine", not "The grapevine", and that meaning of the word is not restricted to colonial Africa. It is widely used or at least understood in most English speaking countries:
