Bumpty
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bumpty is a penguin-like creature found in several Yoshi video games.
Bumpties first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island for the Super Nintendo. True to their name, even the slightest touch will cause Yoshi to be knocked away. This is worsened by the fact that they are often found on very slippery ice. They rush after Yoshi, with little slippage on the ice in doing so, and follow his every move. A Bumpty later appears alongside Dr. Freezegood in Tetris Attack, as the second ally to be saved from King Bowser's control. He replaced Sharbet from Panel de Pon, the original version of Tetris Attack as the second ally to be saved.
In recent times, Bumpties have appeared in the Nintendo 64 sequel, Yoshi's Story. They act similarly to how they acted in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. They also appeared in Paper Mario, living in a town called Shiver City. This time along, however, they are not enemies, although they do express hostility towards Mario who they believe had murdered the Mayor after the Mayor's wife had accused him of murdering him. Another Bumpty, named Ernest Herringway (a reference to famous writer Ernest Hemingway), a famous author, has been missing recently, and Mario has to find him in order to clear his name. Once he does so and brings him to the crime scene, the Mayor gets up. It turns out he was merely knocked out when retrieving a gift for Herringway, and Mario is then allowed to leave Shiver City.
In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario meets a detective penguin named Pennington on a train, who is investigating the series of disappearances on the train. While he put in much effort, Mario was the one who really solved the case. Once the monster named Smorg appeared, Pennington is trapped in its body along with the other train passengers. They eventually arrive at Poshley Heights, which is populated by many Bumpties. Pennington lives in a large building called the Poshley Sanctum, and also has the sixth Crystal Star, but puts a fake one on display, with the real one hidden in the back of the Poshley Sanctum. However, he does not appear to know where the real Crystal Star is.
Bumpties also appeared in Super Mario Advance 4 in one of the World-e levels available only in Japan. They act the same way as they did in Yoshi's Island.
