Bull Creek is named after the creek of the same name, which itself is named for Henry Bull, to whom a grant of 1.20 km² of nearby land was made in 1830. A larger grant of 5.20 km² later in that year was made to Thomas Middleton; it is this land that today makes up the largest part of the suburb.

On the southern side of Bullcreek, there is Bullcreek Shopping Centre. It has Target, Woolworths, Tandy electronics. It also has a Red Rooster and Hungry Jack's restaurant, an ANZ Bank and Commonwealth Bank ATMs in its vicinity. There are a few local shops on Parry Avenue, which cuts through the middle of the suburb.

Residents living in Bullcreek attend Bullcreek Primary School and Oberthur Primary School. All Saints' College is a private school situated on the northern side of Bullcreek. One of the nearest government high schools is Rossmoyne Senior High School. Bullcreek is also very closeby to Murdoch University, Winthrop Baptist College, Murdoch College, and even Sommerville Baptist College via South Street.
