Bulgan is the capital city of Mongolia's Bulgan province, has a population of 18,000 and has been an established settlement for thousands of years, originally serving as an ancient tribal meeting place. A previously very conservative, even backwards, city, in the last few decades it has seen the gradual effects of Westernisation, with shopping malls and cinemas gradually opening up around the city.
