Buijs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Buijs is a Dutch family name based on the name of a fishing vessel.
These small ships were mainly used for catching herring along the north coast of England and Scotland. The ships had a flat bottom so they could be pulled on and off the beach with horses. Later when harbors were built along the Dutch coast, the bottoms were changed to ovals so the ships could take a larger load.
The main harbor for herring fishing was Scheveningen but also ships came from Karwijk, Vlaardingen and Maassluis. In these villages one can find therefore the name Buijs and Buys. The letters i and j to form a new letter ij is typical Dutch and is in addition to the letter y. For Dutch people traveling abroad this can be a problem at passport inspections, as the officer may ask whether or not your name has two dots on the letter (ij).
