Buddhist Patriarch

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Buddhist Patriarch is a leader of buddhism like catholic pope.

But, In Buddhism, Pope is not elected by vote. Only buddha can be Buddhist pope. Who confirm it? Master.

In Buddhism, a buddha (Sanskrit बुद्ध) is any being who has become fully awakened (enlightened), has permanently overcome greed, hate, and ignorance, and has achieved complete liberation from suffering.

In the Pali Canon, the term 'buddha' refers to anyone who has become enlightened (i.e., awakened to the truth, or Dharma) on their own, without a teacher to point out the Dharma, in a time when the teachings on the Four Noble Truths or the Eightfold Path do not exist in the world.

If you want to ask about Catholic or etc problems to Jesus, you can't. Because living Jesus is not here. You can't learn by living jesus.

But, If you want to ask about buddhism or etc problems to Shakyamuni, you can. Because living buddha is here. It is the most important difference structure between buddhism and Catholic.

Shakyamuni said to Mahakasyapa direcrtly. "You are buddha. you become fully awakened". Mahakasyapa said to Ananda direcrtly. "You are buddha. you become fully awakened"...Ko-Bong said to Seung-Sahn direcrtly. "You are buddha. you become fully awakened".

This is the Zen buddhism tradition, at least.

How to test? Koan. If student solve all koans, Master confirms. and heir Patriarch.

The Buddha Shakyamuni
1. Mahakasyapa
According to the legendary history of the Chan and Zen schools, Mahākāśyapa received the Dharma directly from Buddha at the flower sermon on Vulture Peak, where Buddha silently held a flower before his students. A monk named Kāśyapa smiled. The Buddha remarked that Kāśyapa alone of all his students had received his teaching for that day, and should thereafter be known as Mahākāśyapa.
