It is formed in Upshur County at the community of Alexander by the confluence of the Left Fork Buckhannon River[3] and the Right Fork Buckhannon River,[4] both of which rise in southwestern Randolph County and flow generally northward. From there the Buckhannon flows generally northward in a meandering course to the city of Buckhannon, then turns northeastwardly into southwestern Barbour County, where it joins the Tygart Valley River near the community of Carrollton.[2]
