Buccellarii

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Buccellarii were a kind of soldiers kept by the Greek Emperors, in the provinces and countries, so called for being substituted by the Emperor, or because he was at the expense of their eating. The Buccellarii, in the army where the Emperor commanded, marched before and behind him, as his guard.

There were also another kind of Buccellarii, under the Greek Emperors, who furnished the soldiery with bread.
