Bruno Buchberger

Bruno Buchberger (born October 22, 1942 in Innsbruck) is Professor of Computer Mathematics at Austria's Johannes Kepler University. He created, in his 1965 PhD thesis, the theory of Gröbner bases, and has developed this theory throughout his career. He named them after his advisor Wolfgang Gröbner. Since 1995 he is active in the Theorema project at the University of Linz,

In 1987 Buchberger founded and chaired RISC (Research Institute for Symbolic Computation) at Johannes Kepler University. In 1985 he created the Journal of Symbolic Computation which has now become the premier publication in the field of computer algebra.

Buchberger was awarded the Golden Medal of Honor of the Upper Austrian Government. He has received honorary Ph.Ds from the University of Nimegen (1993) and the University of Timisoara (2000).
