I have done no such thing. -- Broken Arms Gordon 18:22, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- I just realized that, and have re-added the link. Amusing. Thanks. JesseW, the juggling janitor 18:28, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Re: DivX
No, codec is not a format. And DivX is a codec.
1. Codec is a piece of software that encodes/decodes data to/from some format.
2. DivX is a codec. DivX is a software product. DivX is a piece of software.
3. There are 2 kinds of "formats" relevant to the DivX article: the file format (container) and the video stream that's inside the container. Container contains audio and video streams and optionaly other kinds of data (such as subtitles).
4. The container format used with DivX and other codecs can be AVI, MP4, OGM, Matroska or other containers such as the new DivX Media Format (which is some kind of "enhanced AVI", based on the same old RIFF structure as the old AVI format). DMF is not DivX, DMF is DMF.
5. The video stream inside the AVI (OGM, ...) container is MPEG-4 ASP bitstream. This is the product of the DivX codec - DivX encodes and decodes MPEG-4 bitstreams.
6. MPEG-4 is a standard. Codec is not the same thing as format, video encoded with one codec can be decoded with another codec if they use the same standard/format. DivX uses the MPEG-4 video compression, MPEG-4 was not invented by DivX, Inc. MPEG-4 was developed by MPEG and it's a standard that many other codecs use, too (that's why they're compatible).
To make it even more clear - you might know that there are many MP3 codecs for example. LAME, Fraunhofer, Xing etc. etc. - when you encode an MP3 file with LAME, it's not "LAME file" or "LAME format", it's MP3, which can be decoded (played back) with other MP3 decoders, too. And if it's still not clear enough - when you create a text file with Notepad, it's not "Notepad file" or "Notepad format", it's a text file that can be viewed and edited in other programs, too.
So, to sum it up - DivX is a piece of software that encodes and decodes MPEG-4 video that's typically stored inside the AVI file format. This video can be decoded (and encoded) with various other MPEG-4 codecs, too. DivX is not a format. J. M. 20:39, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
