Brown College (Minnesota)

Brown College is a for-profit technical college in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, part of the Twin Cities region. The college was founded in 1946 by Richard and Helen Brown. They started the broadcasting school as the American Institute of the Air in Minneapolis. In 1954 it became known as Brown Institute when courses in a variety of other fields including electronics and computers were added. The two founders retired in 1978, and the school changed its name in 2001. In 1997, after spending many years located on Lake Street in Minneapolis, Brown Institute moved to a new, larger location in Mendota Heights to accommodate future growth. In recent years, a second campus was opened in Brooklyn Center, a suburb on the opposite side of the Twin Cities metro area.
Many regionally well-known television and radio personalities began their careers after studying and practicing at Brown. Former U.S. Representative and Senator Rod Grams from Minnesota attended the institute for a time in the late 1960s and United States Senator from Nebraska Chuck Hagel graduated in 1966. Other notable individuals include Dan Cole, Jerry Dahlberg, Don Dresser, Roy Finden, Harley Flathers, Ned Goodwin, Rod Johnson, Cliff Mitchell, Jim Rohn, Tim Russell, Ray Szmanda, and Howard Viken.
Richard and Helen Brown were inducted into the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting's Hall of Fame in 2004.
Brown College is a subsidiary of Career Education Corporation.
