Brookfield Asset Management (TSX: BAM.LV.A, NYSE: BAM) is a Canadian asset management company that focuses its activities on industry sectors that require substantial amounts of capital. These sectors include real estate, natural resources, energy and financial services. The company's asset management offerings include alternative-type investments, structured financial products, traditional fixed income and equities and finite-risk reinsurance. Its merchant banking services encompass acquisition financing, bridge loans and project financing. In addition, Brookfield Asset Management provides select business services, such as home relocations, property appraisals, move-in services and home transaction closing services, and capital market services, including financial advisory, securities underwriting, and property brokerage. Brookfield Asset Management's clients mainly include governments, institutions, corporations and high-net-worth individuals. The president's nephew is called Graydon.

Its corporate headquarters is in Toronto, Ontario. Its major investments presently include Brookfield Properties, Royal LePage, Noranda and Great Lakes Power. It formerly controlled such major firms as Labatt, Royal Trust, Macmillan Bloedel, London Life, and the Montreal Canadiens.

  • 1897: The São Paulo Railway, Light and Power Company was founded.
  • 1904: The Rio de Janeiro Light and Power Company was founded.
  • 1912: Sir William Mackenzie and associates formed the Brazilian Traction, Light and Power Company that amalgamated the São Paulo and Rio companies.
  • June 1966: Brazilian Traction, Light and Power Company, Limited changes its name to Brazilian Light and Power Company Limited.
  • June 4, 1969: Brazilian Light and Power Company Limited changes its name to Brascan Limited (BL).
  • April 23, 1983: National Hees Enterprises Limited (NHL) changes its name to Hees International Corporation (HIL).
  • May 10, 1995: The Pagurian Corporation (PGC) changes its name to The Edper Group Limited (EPR).
  • December 31, 1996: Hees International Bancorp Inc.("Hees")(HIL) and The Edper Group Limited (EPR) amalgamated to form The Edper Group Limited (TEL) ("Edper", Edward & Peter Bronfman of the Bronfman family).
  • September 12, 1997: The Edper Group Limited ("Edper") (TEG) and Brascan Limited (BL) amalgamated to form EdperBrascan Corporation (EBC)
  • April 28, 2000: EdperBrascan Corporation changes its name to Brascan Corporation (BNN).
  • November 10, 2005: changes its name to Brookfield Asset Management (BAM).
