Brooketon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brooketon was a coal mine and settlement situated near the present-day port of Muara, Brunei and was named after the White Rajahs of Sarawak. it is situated close to a hill known as pulau chermin (hill of mirrors) due to the exposed coal face which reflects sunlight. It operated between 1888 and 1924, with unsuccessful Japanese attempts to reopen the mine during the Second World War. Brooketon was the location of the Australian landing which liberated Brunei from Japanese rule. All that remains of Brooketon today is an overgrown railway, locomotives, mine entrances and an abandoned Morris Minor. Brooketon was also where the first postage stamp in Brunei was used.
