Brock University Students' Union

The Brock University Students' Union, known as BUSU, represents the students at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. BUSU is a student run organization representing over 17,000 undergraduate students, providing a wide range of services, businesses and activities. BUSU is a member of the Canadian Alliance of Students Associations and a founding member of the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance.

The Brock University Students' Union executive is made up of four popularly elected students; the President, the Vice President Student Services, the Vice President University Affairs & the Vice President Finanace and Administration. The executive is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Students' Union as well as for developing strategies to implement policy set by the Board of Directors and BUSAC (see below), and collectively providing leadership and direction for the ogranization.

The Brock University Students Administrative Council (BUSAC) is a popularly elected legislative body comprised of representatives from all academic faculties of the university as well as representatives for Residence, Off-Campus & International students. BUSAC is responsible for the legislative oversight of, and political representation of students to the Students' Union, through full council meetings as well as a variety of standing committees. Furthermore, the activities and operations of the Brock University Students' Union are reported to BUSAC by the BUSU executive.

The Brock University Students' Union Board of Directors is comprised of seven members, the President and one other executive member, three members of BUSAC as appointed by BUSAC, as well as two student at large members elected by the students in general elections. The Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing the human resources of the students' union, as well as having a trustee relationship with the organization, particularly in regard to its corporate and legal responsibilities. The Board also serves as the highest level of appeal for all redresses of grievance with, or within BUSU.

The Brock University Students' Union provides the following services to students.

[edit] Orientation Week

BUSU puts on O-Week in conjunction with Brock University during the first week of the school year. Puting on all ages events & information fairs for first year students at Brock as well as returning students. Past events have included dance parties, concerts, midway fairs & desert parties. [edit] Health Plan

The BUSU Health Plan is designed to provide an extended health and accident insurance program especially for Brock students. The goal is to provide peace of mind through insurance and to offset costs associated with their health needs. Coverage includes perscription drug coverage, accidental travel insurance, emergency dental coverage & optical coverage.

[edit] Dental Plan

The BUSU Dental Plan will be implimented for the 2007/2008 year, as it, along with a $1,000,000 Learning Commons referendum, were held from November 21st to 23rd. Both questions passed with 72.3% for the Dental Plan and 75.4% for the Learning Commons. [2]

Brock Off-Campus (BOC) allows students living off-campus the full university experience. Various trips, events and social activities throughout the year help off-campus students stay connected. Past events and activities include semi-formals, camping, BBQs, and professional sporting events. The city is divided up geographically into six teams, each run by a coordinator.

Foot Patrol is a free volunteer service that provides students, staff and visitors with a safe escort on and around campus at night. Volunteers are screened & trained. Foot patrol Opperates every weeknight from 7:30pm-1:30am. Foot Patrol works past 2:30am on Thursday nights as well as during any other special events on campus.

Every Brock student taking 1.5 credits or more receives unlimited use of St. Catharines, Welland, and Niagara Falls Transit. This service is paid for by an ancillary fee collected with student tuition.

[edit] Emergency Student Loan Program

The Brock University Students' Union offers interest-free short-term loans and grocery vouchers for students experiencing immediate unmet financial need.

[edit] Brock Aid First Aid Responders

Currently in its first year of operation, Brock Aid provides emergency medical response during BUSU events, and during Thursday nights at Isaacs. Brock Aid is also available free of charge, upon request to staff other events in the University community.

The Brock University Students' Union ratafies student clubs and provides them with funding and organizational assistance. Furtherore, BUSU provides clubs with room bookings, BUSU.net e-mail addresses, postings on the BUSU buliten boards and advertising in the Brock Press.

BUSU clubs are overseen by the BUSU Vice President Student Services.

In addition to providing services, BUSU also owns and runs several businesses.

[edit] Isaac's Bar

Isaac's is one of the biggest campus bars in Canada. It has played host to many headline bands, including Sum 41, Three Days Grace, Finger 11, Sloan, The Trews, Bedouin Soundclash and Sam Roberts.

Union Station is located in the Students' Centre and offers several choices of freshly prepared food at student-friendly prices.

SUBcetera is the on campus convenience store, with two separate locations on campus.

[edit] SkyBar Lounge

The SkyBar Lounge is a licensed bar and lounge where students can sit down and enjoy freshly prepared food in a laid-back atmosphere.

Advertising and Design Services is BUSU's in-house shop that handles all BUSU publications and advertising.

BUSU is also the publisher of the Brock Press, Brock University's weekly student newspaper.
