Family names of Broad Cove in 1950-60 were; Lockyer, Green, Brown, Hollett, Dowden, Hapgood, Trowbridge, Cumby, and Warren.

The main activity of the community was fishing = fishing for cod and lobster. It had a herring factory owned by H.C. Brown and packed herring for the West Indies. It also had a large fish store with outside fish flakes for the natural curing of salted cod fish. At the herring factory wharf, salt, flour and coal were unloaded for the local market, and salt fish and or herring was picked up for export.

Popular children's summer activities included "playing cowboys", piddly, rolling hoops, walking on stilts, swimming in the BIG POND, or in the salt water. Winter activities included ice hockey, sliding and "hopping bally clampers".
