[edit] Vandalism?!?!

Surely IF what Rossnixon did of adding in a word to the creation science article was "bad" when compared to the previous state of it then what you did [1] of then putting in the *opposite* instead has got to be on average equally bad! Perhaps just think more carefully about that aspect of it next time? Thanks Mathmo 17:59, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

And I should probably add that a true revert would have put it back to the exact same state, and have not added in your own opposing viewpoint. And to have called it a revert in the edit summary is rather sneaky if not down right deceitful. Mathmo 18:00, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blain

Hi: I saw the message on the topic in your archives, and I wanted to just let you know that when I saw 'blain', I thought of chilblains, which are blisters. So perhaps calling it a blister would be appropriate. Also, despite the description from the time, the malady that it reminded me of was described in one of the James Herriot books, where he had to lance an abscess in a cow's throat that was threatening to cut off its airway. He exlained that at the time they didn't know what caused these frequent abscesses, but later wisdom decreed that they were most likely caused by tuburculosis.--Anchoress 02:04, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] microwaved DVD

If you can spare the money again, I think I know what is wrong with it not making featured picture - it is the perspective. If you can get a photo of it at a particular angle such that it looks like a landscape, perhaps that would do it. Elle vécut heureuse à jamais (Be eudaimonic!) 22:44, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Classical music titles

Hello Brian. I'm honored that my article on Stravinsky's Mass was chosen for DYK! You changed the title from Bold Roman Type to Italicized Bold. I'm confused because according to the Wikipedia's Classical Music Manual of Style, generic titles like Symphony and Mass should not be italicized. I changed it back in the actual article but don't believe I have such privelages for the main page. Thanks for your input? -- MarkBuckles 13:04, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DYK wording for Yucca Mountain Johnny

I noticed you just changed the wording for Yucca Mountain Johnny's fact in DYK. Is there a reason you removed the bit about it being controversial? That's kind of the reason I thought it was interesting in the first place.

Also, you used the past tense "was", but I think "is" would be more appropriate, as the cartoon still exists. --JerryOrr 15:44, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Well, I personally think the comparison to Joe Camel is compelling enough to be in the DYK blurb, but you're the Admin, so it's your prerogative. I do think you ought to change the tense, though, as I mentioned earlier. --JerryOrr 15:55, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Care to explain?

What's going on?.. --Ghirla -трёп- 15:31, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

I don't think it's fair to promote your own entry from the second to the first position at the expense of a superior entry. Also, I find your practice of heavily revising nominations once they are featured in the template rather disturbing. Please reflect that both authors and nominators may not like your gratuitous rephrasing. Nominations have sufficient exposure on Template talk:Did you know to discuss proposed changes there, rather than implement them single-handedly on Template:Did you know. Take care, Ghirla -трёп- 15:40, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
If you only fix grammatical or stylistic problems, as you claim, please find time to do so on Template talk:Did you know. Don't you think that even "grammatical or stylistic problems" may be subjective and their fixing controversial? As to your second argument, most nominators know DYK procedures too little to understand who changes their nominations and why. Cheers, Ghirla -трёп- 15:49, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Grammar Nazism

I like language to evolve and support coining new words or, in this case, coming up with alternate definitions. But I am guilty of grammar nazism from time to time, too. I like keeping the old rules for a sense of basic structure (different from, not different than). In my opinion, a distinction exists between innovative usage and erroneous usage. And I am a physics student, too. Teply 17:45, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Very nice article! I'd like to make a quick request and some more general comments:

[edit] Protecting POTD rows

Hello, Brian0918! I noticed you protected a series of POTD rows, which appear on the Main Page. There's no need to protect so far in advance; I, along with a few other admins, regularly take care of protecting the main page images, templates and pages. We usually protect no more than 24 hours in advance, leaving editing as open as long as possible. I understand your protection of the POTD rows, similarly to how the FA templates are protected in advance, but the POTD text hasn't been "approved", per say, and it's best we leave it as open as possible. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 17:23, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Ah, I see. I've been travelling for a few days and I guess no one else noticed that it wasn't protected. However, I should be able to take care of things from now on. In the future, I'll also protect a day or two in advance if I know I won't be available. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 17:30, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DYK fiddling

[3] Why not propose correct ions to the noms you have issues with while they are unselected instead of fiddling with them after they're on the main page? You waited a whole 1 minute after I saved to start. I'd prefer you didn't do that every time. And if you do, make all your fixes in one go, the main page and its includes get a lot of hits. ++Lar: t/c 01:50, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

(I prefer to keep threads threaded ++Lar)
When they're on the talk page, I focus on the interest of the fact, not its grammar. That can easily be fixed once its being finalized. When I update, I usually check the grammar before submitting the new entries. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-16 02:03
OK, makes sense, but still, try to make all your fixes in one pass instead of 6, please, it clutters the history up badly. Makes it harder to find the last pic to unprotect sometimes... I'm not sure I agree that 4000 needed to be 4,000 in this particular case though... more importantly I have a larger concern with changing more than just grammar, like you did for that ruminant and the scent gland. That again is something that should have been corrected while it was a nom, in my view, if it mattered that much. ++Lar: t/c 02:08, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Also, just so you know, editing a template that is included on the main page is not a problem. The main page is only one page, and it only has to be regenerated that one time. Editing a template that is included on thousands of pages, like a stub template, is much worse, because those thousands of pages all have to be regenerated (I just checked with a dev to make sure). But the dev said neither are a problem. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-16 02:10
Already knew that, thanks. I'm referring to the amount of real change visible in one page of the history for the template. 6 small edits in a row means less real change visible. It's a bad practice if you can avoid it. Try to use preview more. (I should talk because I have the same problem, but still...) ++Lar: t/c 02:48, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
I didn't even see the scent gland entry in the suggestions... maybe it was a late nomination. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-16 02:11

[edit] DYK

Your update of DYK added the article Banu Nadir to the page... which... was created 23:22, 13 February 2006... not within the five day time frame. Tickle Me nominated it... but... be careful.... it did have lots of content growth and I don't feel like removing it (because... I think it's better to change all of them at once) but... like... it shouldn't be there? Thanks. gren グレン 19:52, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Ah, okay... that has been changed recently. Last time I looked must have been then or before so I didn't notice. Sounds good. gren グレン 21:15, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

It's been changed recently, but in a very biased way. There was a treaty between all the jews of Medina and and Muhammed formed in 622, and the current version of the article doesn't mention it at all, citing The Jews of Arab Lands: A History and Source Book, which probably doesn't mention it either. The treaty was broken in 623 with each side accusing the other of treachery -- which again, the current version of the article omits, but earlier versions covered. I think you've been trolled. [edit] Compitalia

I am finding this article extremely confusing. Are these mostly articles within Smith? Maybe using the format generated by {{cite encyclopedia}} would be useful. Regards. Circeus 23:09, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Indeed they are:
  • Saturnalia i.7
    • Is that the "saturnalia" entry in one of the ref, a book title, a classic work? Same for all otehr similar entries.
  • In Pisonem. 4; Ascon. l.c.
    • This one looks like a classicalwork, but the abbreviation of the author's anme makes it impossible for the layman to know who it is.
Am I mistaken in saying you are giving the same references as Smith? I don't think that is necessary. I think these refs use a system that is explained somewhere in the book itself (e.g. for abbreviations and "standard" titles), but in Wikipedia becomes simply impossible to understand. Oups... Sorry about the greek stuff. I should have checked before saving. Circeus 03:02, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Maybe, when you read this in time...

Hi Brian!

I believe the News section on the Main Page of the English Wikipedia has an omission today... Maybe if you read this in time, it could still be fixed. I have put a little piece about this in the News Items on the Main Dutch Page as well. Here's the English translation of what I wrote there... Something along these lines should be carried by the English version too, I believe...:

[quote on]

  • June 18 » Paul McCartney, who wrote his song "When I'm Sixty-Four" over 50 years ago, will himself reach the age of 64 today! . Tomorrow at the latest he will be able to say from his own experience that today's 64-year-old, with his dramatically increased life expectancy, has luckily turned out much less old, frail and tired of life than his counterpart halfway into the 20th century, who after all inspired young Paul to those famous, worried lines: "When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now, / Will you still be sending me a Valentine, / birthday greetings, bottle of wine? / If I'd been out 'till quarter to three, / would you lock the door? / Will you still need me, will you still feed me, / When I'm sixty-four?" ...

[quote off]

[edit] Update notices

[4] Please do not remove, or claim to remove, update notices, let the updating DYK admin do it. Thank you. Further, is it REALLY necessary to ALWAYS fiddle with every update, especially while it's still in progress? It's very offputting, please stop doing it. ++Lar: t/c 19:58, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

(refactored, this is the second time I've had to do this with a conversation of yours. Another annoying trait is that apparently you don't read talk page headers)

We edited at the same time, so although I did remove it, you did first. I just assumed you forgot, as another admin removed my DYK notice when I forgot. I don't see the problem with fixing grammatical errors. Nobody owns the template. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-18 20:01
It is not necesary to fix things while the update is in progress. It's rude and causes errors and wasted communication. You seem to like to edit rather tendentiously and I find it quite offputting. DYK was a lot more harmonious before you started participating again, and that is not just my perception. Perhaps there might be another area of the encyclopedia that could better appreciate your contributions? ++Lar: t/c 20:07, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
I didn't know fixing grammatical errors could be so offputting. Well, I'm going to continue, but I'll at least wait until the update notice is gone, or at least a while after the update, to give the updater a chance to fix his own mistakes. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-18 20:23
It's not just that, Brian, it's your whole approach to editing. That whole ordering thing really demonstrated it nicely... you made a change without checking for consensus first, fought tenaciously against reverting it back in the teeth of everyone else saying you needed to do it, that it was a bad change, and that it was the wrong way to do things, all the time refusing to admit that you had done anything wrong and when finally, someone else did your cleanup for you, your attitude was "oh gee, it doesn't matter, you all are wrong but whatever". Totally not the right way to be collegial. When I review your other contributions to the DYK process, in many (but not all) cases, the same pattern emerges. Really, I strongly ask you to change your approach, admit that you're sometimes incorrect, and when you are, make amends instead of ignoring the messes you caused, and discuss things in a way that appears less abrasive. I've asked around and I'm by far not the only person that reads your words and finds them offputting. Not just on DYK, mind you, but that's the part of the site I wanted to be able to edit that caused me to want to be an admin in the first place, so it's the part I care about most, and you're just making it a lot less pleasant, and I wish you'd change your approach. ++Lar: t/c 20:52, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
The ordering of a talk page and grammatical fixes in a template are unrelated. Are you trying to make a list of grievances against me? Also, please don't use quotes around misrepresentations of my words. I did admit that I was mistaken in being bold and updating the ordering. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-18 20:54
I'm talking about a pattern of behaviour here, and so the different actions are indeed related, they are part of a pattern. As for the quotes around "oh gee, it doesn't matter, you all are wrong but whatever"... that is how I (and others) interpreted your words, the quotes were a setoff, not an intent to quote you, since I said "your attitude" not "your words". I would dispute that you properly dealt with that ordering incident, admitting your mistake but refusing to undo it is not collegial. I note that you're not addressing the fundamental issue here, and I wish you'd internalise that there might be an issue and that you might want to consider a change in approach. ++Lar: t/c 21:31, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
As long as I'm making grammatical errors or obvious stylistic improvements, I don't see the problem. You really sound your inflating your problems with me, whatever they are, for whatever reason. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-19 01:49
And you really sound like you're not internalising what I and others tell you. As long as you don't do any more rash things that are hard to undo, I guess it's not the end of the world. ++Lar: t/c 02:07, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Categories Which List People Executed by Governments

From Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 June 16#Category:People killed by or on behalf of Muhammad, you stated...

Should we also delete the several other categories which list people executed by governments or leaders for various reasons? Your reasoning makes no sense. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-16 15:30

I found Category:People killed by the Third Reich, but that was it. What are the others you had in mind? joturner 22:11, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

I was overly-precise. I've seen other examples, but my only regular experience is with the Category:People executed for heresy. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-18 22:13
I see. I don't believe that's really comprable to the category up for deletion. joturner 22:15, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
It's a category of people executed by a religious organization. How is that different from a category of people executed by order of a religious leader? — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-18 22:20
You are free to disagree, but I would consider Category:People executed by the Roman Catholic Church to be analagous to Category:People killed on behalf of Muhammad and Category:People executed for heresy to be analagous to Category:People killed for rejecting Muhammad's teachings because the former two are by a group (the Church or Muhammad's people) while the later two are for specific offenses. joturner 22:28, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Again, you are free to disagree. joturner 22:39, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

User:Publicola even raised many issues on talk page, but those issues aren't answered yet but the article is reverted to its original form again and again. [edit] re: Speedy-deletion of User:Abodes

Good evening. You recently speedy-deleted this userpage as a copyvio. I have to admit I suspected that as well but could not find anything that was an obvious copyvio. I found a few similar pages but they appeared to be released by the original author and did not appear to me to violate GFDL. Can I ask where you found the copyvio?

By the way, I still think this was deletable. I'm just not sure it was speedy-deletable. Thanks. Rossami (talk) 23:29, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for confusion about the selection, I go by the noms and forgot to check the template. [edit] Your advice abt DYK updation

While I empathise with your suggestion, what choice do I have with all these DYK candidates becoming stale by the time of next update? You may want to check my new post on WT:DYK. --Gurubrahma 18:04, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Once you make a relaxation to the 5-day limit, there is no end to it. As it is, updating admins are accused of favoritism many-a-time. I know as I've been at DYK updation much longer and earlier than you. My reading of the situation is that there has been a pile-up not because of too many suggestions but because the admins couldn't get round to updating DYK. btw, I deleted the image you c-uploaded for the last update - you didn't add the attribution information to the image page while uploading; please do so in future as instructed on {{C-uploaded}}. Copyrights and attribution are a sensitive issue to Wikimedia foundation, and by extension, to WP community. --Gurubrahma 18:18, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
btw, just to stress that I felt that the noms were diverse. In fact my only worry about balance was that the update was more of art and music (3 entries). I actually looked at it as one on science, one from Russia, one from America (sculptor), one from music and one from Christianity in East (Siam=Thailand). Guess each of us views things differently :-) --Gurubrahma 18:43, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] reversion of comment in this thread

"(rv personal attack; leave it on his talk page if you want to criticize my every move. do you have my talk page on your watchlist, or my contribs page?)" I watch this page, as with many other talk pages of editors I interact with, because I have started conversations here, more than once, so watching for replies (I prefer threads kept together) is natural, hope that explains it. I have no issue with others participating in conversations on my page when they have something to say that's relevant, which I thought my comment was. However I don't believe I've ever had a comment reverted, so clearly we're at loggerheads here, it's not my desire to ever say anything that is taken as a personal attack, and I apologise if you took it that way, and for giving offense...

To the point though... you're saying you don't like having your every move criticised? That's a sentiment I strongly share, I do not like having my every move criticised either.. I'm sorry if you think I'm too critical of you and your actions. I think you're too critical of my actions as well. I'll go further, I'd like to try to see if we can all come to some understanding that results in your being less critical of others as well as others being less critical of you. I'll be on IRC tonite, perhaps we could chat directly, you and I, as a starting point? ++Lar: t/c 21:04, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

  • It seems like every single page I edit, you're right behind me with a snide remark. I'd be fine if you were commenting on my rationale, but it's always about what you believe is my personality/demeanor, the prime example being also being the one I deleted from this page. You'd think with your 25 years of professional experience you'd learn how to interact with people in a civilized way and not resort to ad hominem nonsense. How about if I just ignore you from now on? — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-21 22:17
    • If ignoring me includes not being incivil to me, not giving out snide remarks to me, and not criticising everything I do the way you did here, then that might well be about the best we can do. I'd prefer to try to figure out how to work with you productively, though, and have made an offer to do so, which you are free to accept or not as you choose. I'm always open to feedback from those who are open to feedback as well. ++Lar: t/c 23:02, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Guys, please cool it - you are both mature individuals with great track record on WP. May I make a suggestion? Lar has decided that he'll no longer update his DYK noms to the template. The objective I guess, is to show that there is no conflict of interest. This would have been a bad idea if only one admin were updating DYK (like I was doing for a couple of months or Peta was doing before me). Now that we have at least 3 regular admins updating DYK (both of you and Catus.man have been doing a decent job) with part-timers chipping now and then, I think this suggestion makes immense sense. I wish you guys make up. May I take the liberty to propose that Brian do the next update with Kar's photo suggestion on Artrain making it to the top? We will resolve remaining issues of the updation process etc. in due course of time. All of us have erred however minute in this situation, now let's extricate ourselves from this mess with grace. We as admins are supposed to be role-models for others. Please ignore my message if it has offended either of you and let me unconditionally apologise in advance. Thanks, --Gurubrahma 14:18, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] s:List of victims of the 1913 Great Lakes storm

I hate to open up a sore subject with you, and I imagine this will be one from reading the talk page. However Wikisource has altered her inclusion policy to the exclusion of reference data. The restriction to previously published materials is being strictly enforced with the only exceptions being translations and annotations of published materials. Reference data is being phased out with new batches being listed at proposed deletions every week. This article has not been listed as of yet, but it is only a matter of time. I saw the talk page on this article as I was tagging it with {{refdata}} and wanted to make you aware of the situation. On the brighter side, Wikipedia seems to have loosened up on her policy towards lists and you are likely to find a home for this here.--Birgitte§β ʈ Talk 20:56, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] er, help (undeletion / new article of a deleted one)

Sorry, I didn't know where to go with this, I'm not the best Wikipedian in the world. You put up an article of mine for deletion (but did not carry out the final deletion action(?)), back in December, YouThink.com. I have rewritten the article so that it is more clear that it isn't an advertisement (because that was not its purpose), and the facts that it has more than 270,000 members, as well as the Links section of the site (I-Am-Bored.com domain name) has an Alexa rank in the 2000s, which are at least two requirements that make it an acceptable Wikipedia article (which it only needs one, I believe). I don't really need the article un-deleted, because I've already written it over and all.. so I wasn't sure if I had to go through the formal undeletion procedure (which confuses me just a little), or if I could just put it back up? Thank you for help if you give it to me. EgyptianSushi 09:10, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] ==Legends==

Here is the translation, that needs some editing:

There are a few legends about the island Barsa-Kelmes, for examples: the observation of prehistoric lizards, or the landings of UFO. There is a common belief that time on the island flows differently. Some people who lost their way and spent there, as they thought, just a few hours where returned in a few days. Some refuges hidden themselves there for a year wend back home in a few decades. However these claims were not supported by the facts and, as thought, the result of mystifications.

One of the authors of such mystifications was the science fiction writer Sergey Lukyanenko who admitted in the “Information Summary of KLF MGU” (at the Moscow University): “The stories about flying saucers and machines of time at Barsa-Kelmes that are presented by “TM” (the magazine “Tekhnika Molodyozhi”) as true facts were taken completely out of thin air. Independently of each other newer and newer generations were joined this game. And if we do not stop this chitchat, our grand children will organize expeditions to the unhappy islet. So I have to repent my sins. And cheerful picture from “TM”, where pteranodon bears in the beak flying saucer, alas, it is without foundation”.

In June 2000, the 80th expedition of "Kosmopoisk" took place here. (meladina 14:03, 29 June 2006 (UTC))

Unfortunately, there's a typo in the nomination: it should read Angevin, not Angevine. Can you fix this on the main page? Choess 02:28, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Never mind, I solicited a fix on IRC. Choess 02:47, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Did you know

I've been away for a while from Did you know, and I'm kind of missing some info. How long are items supposed to stick on the main page before they become stale nowadays? Also, I think the template indicating the new refreshment time is broken. It states the last update was 9 hours ago, when in fact it was 6 hours ago. Please answer the first question on my talk page. - Mgm|(talk) 10:23, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you for not being brutal

As the author of Chaos Theory of Literature, I'm completely fine with having my article criticized -- perhaps I was hasty in thinking it proper to assign an entire theory to this area of study. I accept all criticisms from you folks who have more experience than I on Wikipedia. I will defer without protest to whatever the WP community decides.

However, calling the page (and its contents) "pomo garbage" is a bit harsh, don't you think? The works I mentioned and the insight they offer are important to me; perhaps there is a way to change the content of the article in a way that doesn't bash its very existence. I am very much opposed to the cult of postmodernism and its relentless effort to co-opt every tiny element of culture (popular and otherwise). I do not feel that this is the case here -- there are very real and significant links to be made between the findings of chaos theoreticians and the study of literature.

Further, I never cited Jurassic Park as evidence for anything; I merely noted that it discusses chaos theory (echoing a comment made by someone else). If the discussion of chaos theory in the novel isn't erudite enough, I don't know what to say. The fact remains that it is an integral theme of the novel, and that Ms. Hawkins analyzes it in detail.

Personally, I feel that the suggestion made by Goethean on the afd page is most agreeable (doesn't it suit your erstwhile comment that "there's a big difference between using an idea as a metaphor to aid in explaining another field, and devising an all-out theory of the field"?), but -- as I said -- I will defer to the more experienced here. -- Scartol 12:38, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DYK

Updated DYK query On July 6, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Tone variator, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

[edit] Big image favor

Brian, I've noticed that you do a lot of work with featured picture candidates, and I was wondering if you could help me out with a FAC I'm interested in getting promoted. The article is Gregorian chant, and the lead image is commons:Image:Graduale Aboense.jpg. As you can see, someone recently uploaded a straightened-out version of this image, however the quality has been seriously degraded to my eye. I was wondering if you could straighten the original image with less loss in quality? Thanks very much for any time you can give. Cheers, Mak (talk) 16:03, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unblocked

Hi. Just wanted to let you know that I removed a block you placed on User:86.140.170.23. While it was certainly a personal attack that's a British Telecom IP potentially used by alot of people. For example, it was impacting User:Skittle. As that was the only edit ever under the IP address hopefully it won't be repeated. --CBD 20:20, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello Brian. I was trying out the ogg format and i used ffmpegtotheora (something like that, i renamed it so it would be easier) to convert a video that has a framerate of 30 and is 36 seconds long into an ogg file, and it ALWAYS ends up 10 seconds or less! I tried lots of different commands and just converting without any options, and it's always 10 seconds! (The "media help page" told me to contact you) If you can, please leave a reply on my talk page. Thanks!

[edit] Questionable information in Rime (frost) article

While browsing the featured pictures, I found it hard to believe that supercooled water droplets in the atmosphere could be 10mm in diameter. This page has the same text as quoted in the article, but with what I think are more reasonable numbers, in micrometers instead of millimeters. I know nothing about frost, but I thought maybe you'd like to be informed of this discrepancy between sources.

[edit] Response

If you would have read the entire subpage of the Muybridge nomination, you would have found a written agreement by myself to independently nominate the two within 24 hours, in hopes of finding a counter-solution to the current chaos. Times not up. Whether intentional or not, I would hope in future circumstances of this sort, that you would examine the discussion more carefully. In order to prevent further eccentricity by some users, I will not, respectively, counter your actions. You wrote there was no such thing as replacement. It was exercised when the monopoly board image was nominated for replacement, and no person presented complaint. And due to your large, bolded text, I suppose you would be most interested in the future outcome of situations such as this. A line must be drawn between nominating for replacement images of exact representation/similarity and images that are completely similar but represent different genres. The third option being replacements are automatically forbidden and a permanent notice is present on the FPC Nominations page. Due to the upheaval of the current replacement, I propose the third. What do you think? -- AJ24 19:58, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reply

Yes, I now agree. But with the current situation in mind, should replacements be banned entirely? -- AJ24 20:11, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Featuring in DYK

Hi, may I ask you to comment on Talk:Battle of Khaybar, where an editor is trying to remove a DYK notice from the talk page? He argues that the article was listed in Did you know in error because it was unstubbed rather than started shortly before being featured. Pecher Talk 06:28, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Re [7]; "...simply because removing that notice makes no sense"; well it may makes no sense to you or to some people, but definitely not to two experienced editors there (actually two and a half). But if the result of this in your view is that "it makes no sense" as an objective reality, then I can guess why that phrase was repeated twice in your comment. --Aminz 10:19, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Battle of Khaybar

Hi Brian. In response to your intervention over talk:Battle of Khaybar:

  • The article in question is a highly contentious one involving disputes over historical fact and interpretation
  • The article was neither new nor recently "unstubbed"; see for example this version from three months prior to the DYK listing
  • The DYK extract which appeared on the main page included a controversial claim not supported by consensus
  • The editor who has involved you in this dispute is a notorious edit warrior who was 24-hour blocked for 3RR only yesterday
  • The listing was neither innocent nor really "an error"; it was, in fact, a calculated piece of POV-pushing by partisan editors
  • Given the DYK listing was not legitimate, retaining the DYK notice serves only to reward these wiki-gamers, and to encourage them

I hope you're now able to see why retaining the notice on that page is not in the interests of the project. — JEREMY 16:10, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey Brian, do you think anyone will see the links at the bottom? I'm not convinced of their utility. Although they certainly do no harm. --Monotonehell 16:01, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Could be could be... heh. Maybe the problem is that they are off to the side. I've been playing with redesigns of that header for weeks now. I still haven't hit on an uncluttered design that I think works. --Monotonehell 16:26, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Islamic Wikiproject Award

Would you be so kind as to go to the discussion about the Islamic Wikiproject Award? This has been a proposal that has lingered for donkey's yonks. I think the image is acceptable as a WP:PUA, but don't think the image is in line with most of the images at Wikipedia:Wikiproject awards. The design is not well supported, and right before I was going to archive the debate for lack of support, someone else moved it to the Wikiproject awards page.

[edit] BTP

[edit] Talk:Boston Tea Party

Howdy, I noticed that you and I seem to post in one or two articles dealing with progressive issues in political science/sociology. There's currently a debate beginning in Boston Tea Party as to whether the article should include the category [8]. It meets definitions set in the articles Terrorism and Definition of terrorism, however, there are several self-proclaimed patriots who watch BTP who refuse to recognise the fact. The simple criteria for terrorism generally seem to be intimidation or destruction of property in order to change public policy or public opinion while a state of war has not yet been declared. Some users would rather use recent acts of terrorism as a yardstick, rather than using a firm definition, and hence lose their ability to discuss matters calmly. Would you be able to pop in to the Talk page and join in the discussion? Thanks much, samwaltz 05:08, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] arrested developement talk.

Hello. Never had anything much to do with wikipedia before, except as a reader. Was just looking at the Arrested Developement Talk page and noticed there are TWO "Bush comparison" sections. I'm guessing it's an editing error, but may be intentional. Figured I'd point it out to someone and found your name first as having something to do with the page. Would send email, but need to register/log in first so this seems to be the only recourse available. Still I hesitate to add something to this 'page', but I guess you can always delete it... right? Dan.

[edit] Dominickers (ethnic group)

Brian, thanks much for adding the section headers! I'm new and still feeling my way through all the ways & means of formatting. But as the article has grown in length, I was already thinking about dividing it into sections; you've made that little task easier for me now, and I appreciate your help.

BTW, I do think it may be a point not worth quibbling over, the use of "today's" vs. "modern American" standards. If you will go read the two short typescript accounts, reproduced verbatim at source #3 in my list, I think you might agree with me that the nasty, vicious attitude displayed there would indeed be considered racist *anywhere* on any continent in "today's" world, not only in America. Go check them out and let me know what you think.

Thanks again for the help, though. Textorus 20:48, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Yet More Eurovision... (from Main Page talk)

The issue is that right now every nomination at DYK conforming to the guidelines is accepted and displayed on the main page, with no discretion on the part of the admins. This means that every single eligible Eurovision article gets featured on the main page eventually. So adding more articles on other subjects is not a useful way to reduce the number of the DYKs on a single repetitive subject appearing on the front page. What is needed is less frequent updating of DYK, which will allow admins to exercise more discretion in choosing from among the submissions and allow for more variety. I would like you to take a careful look at the picture of the 1927 Solvay Conference you can find on Københavnerfortolkningen - Pressemateriale, and compare that to the picture you uploaded to Commons a while back, Image:Solvay conference 1927.jpg. To me it looks like that it is a different shot taken during the same photo session; people are in a slightly different position compared to the Commons picture. Not only that, to me it looks like that it is even sharper than the one you uploaded to Commons. I don't know what to do with it; I am hesitant to upload it to Commons, because I have my doubt wrt copyright status. The website states "Billederne herunder kan frit benyttes af pressen.", which I think means something like "the pictures below can be freely used in print", but my knowledge of Danish is not what it should be :-) JdH 21:41, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pi-unrolled

I recently cranked out a new and greatly improved version of Pi-unrolled.gif and (why not?) nominated it for FP. Since you commented on the nomination of the previous version of the same graphic, I'd like to invite you to comment on the new nomination. Thank you. John Reid 04:18, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Much obliged

Through the course of searching for a specific genus of spider, I somehow stumbled upon your user page once more via an Araneus marmoreus image (Image:Araneus marmoreus 1.jpg). It seemed rather coincidental considering you have granted me yet another generous service (the antecedent being the Richard D. James mp3s). Cheers. — Nalco 05:18, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Good article but, if I may ask, when you say that "recently, while improvements were being made...", would it be possible to put a more specific date on that? Not necessarily an exact one, just more precise than "recently." Biruitorul 00:20, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Adding "Contents" link to Main Page

Hi, Brian0918. A discussion at Talk:Main Page#Proposal: add one or more of these links to the main page seems to show consensus to add a link to Contents at the top of the Main Page. To keep 800X600 displays on one line, this can be accomplished by removing the link to Searching, then adding the Contents link just to the left of Categories. However, no admin has stepped forward to add the link. User:David Levy, suggested to me that you might be willing to talk a look and make the change. Thanks for your consideration. Take a look at User:R and what it links to, I do not see any reason for "User:R" to be used, as it is inactive (total). And, also, I want to have the username "R". Is there anyway for me to have this username?

Please reply on User_talk:Tsaiight.

[edit] FAO Graph

Hi Brian, I found your graph under a 'green revolution' search for the FAO stats for 1961-2004 for grain production. I'm trying to create similar graphs to this. I'm wondering what software you used to create this or if you found it off the FAO site and where. I have only been able to find the numbers but no graphs. This one is great. Thanks, suzanne

Hello Brian,

Some time ago, you added a script to MediaWiki:Standard.js. Did you mean for this to be at MediaWiki:Monobook.js? The Standard.js file is not actually used within the MediaWiki system.

Anyway, I would like to add it, if I can, to Monobook.js. Are there any tweaks I would have to make to it to pull that off? Karl Dickman talk 16:55, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Peters the faker

Your addition to In Search of Excellence that Peters admitted to faking the data in this book is so desperately out of context that it's tantamount to libel. Did you read the actual admission in Fast Company provided at the end of the article? A vastly better version of this admission was removed by Wookiepedian in September. At best, Peters is not using the word "data" in a conventional sense, the sense that would, for example, lead a scientist who "faked data" directly to a board of inquiry: he is referred to having portrayed the selection of "excellent" companies as having been more objective and data-driven than it fact it was; that it had in fact been based just as much on talking to really smart people and trusting gut instincts. The word "fake" is being used to poke a sharp pin at business consulting in general and the delusional mystique that surrounds his own book.

Was our process fundamentally sound? Absolutely! If you want to go find smart people who are doing cool stuff from which you can learn the most useful, cutting-edge principles, then do what we did with Search: Start by using common sense, by trusting your instincts, and by soliciting the views of "strange" (that is, nonconventional) people. You can always worry about proving the facts later.

I'm not going to wade into this page right now. Perhaps if you feel the importance of including this admission, you can sort out with Wookiepedian why the superior inclusion of this fact-about-faking was previously reverted. MaxEnt 20:49, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Admin talk same-sex marriage

Hi Brian: I just noticed that you and a few admins had a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive147#User:IZAK criticizing same-sex marriage on talk page that took place 16-17 November 2006. I would have liked to respond to the comments there at the time, but the page has already been archived, even though the question of editing the article is not over. So I am copying the following response to you, that I had wanted to put in. Best wishes, IZAK 09:21, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Response from IZAK

Hi folks I just noticed your comments here and I wanted to respond in my own "defense" to set the record "straight" (good pun, no? ;-}) So here goes: IZAK 09:05, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

  • If an article deals with same-sex marriage, then as long as the comment/s on a talk page (yet!) deals with that topic it is connected to it, even though it may be phrased in a way that may not always please everyone... because according to the Bible it is a shame on South Africa and any other place that makes same-sex marriage "legal" since the Bible condemns that kind of behavior. What if a law was passed "allowing" theft, or murder, or adultery? Would that make them "legal" too? This is not about WP:SOAP, this is about understanding why the majority of religious leaders and people are opposed to such things, and that can, must and will be part of articles like this. What can I do, I didn't write the Bible! Honest!
  • At no point did I re-insert my comment 3 times into the talk pae within 24 hours, and to say that it violates the 3RR is false. I did it over a few days, so there could not have been any application of the 3RR in this case under any circumstance.
  • תועבה can be translated in a few ways, I was using only one from the JPS version. Indeed, I actually prefer one translation given by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan who said that the word means "mistaken act" תוע-בהbut regardless of how it translated into other languages, the Hebrew Bible clearly condemns this act.
  • The list of "abominations" in the Bible is long, and homosexuality is most definitely one of the abominations, so we can't argue it away with other comparisons that are not to the point.
  • I subsequently expanded the implications of what I had written on the talk page, but it was not written in "religious" terms, but that addition to the article was deleted because an editor there said it was "all made up".
  • At that point, after someone threatened to block me, instead of practicing what they preached and engaging me in a serious dialogue on the issues and not as a distraction about what I was doing, I took the entire matter to Mediation Cabal where it has remained this past week. See Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2006-11-17 Religious opposition to same-sex marriage in South Africa and Wikipedia talk:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2006-11-17 Religious opposition to same-sex marriage in South Africa, where you can read the series of events and when they took place. Please feel free to add your comments there as well, I'd love to hear from you.
  • Finally, when the dust settles I will go back to work on the article and provide many more quotes and references, so that the article can reflect all parties views in South Africa, and not just those of the ANC-South African Communist Party-dominated government, parliament, and courts. There are always at least two sides to every story, right? That is the essence of NPOV. IZAK 09:06, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Queen Beatrix.PNG

Thanks for uploading Image:Queen Beatrix.PNG. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Oden 09:01, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Grue zork.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Grue zork.gif. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Tempshill 12:37, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
