Network Rail while passenger services and all but 17 stations are operated by a total of 26 privately owned train operating companies (Network Rail directly operate the remaining 17 principal stations).
The British railway network consists of almost 10,300 miles of track and serves around 2500 stations. They were built from 1999–2001 by Alstom at Washwood Heath in Birmingham. They were originally built for First North Western, but since then franchise reorganisations have meant the fleet has been transferred to Arriva Trains Wales who sub-hire some to First TransPennine Express. News Is Updated Every Monday Monday 23rd October British Transport Police are hunting for a man who has started defecating on trains across south-east England. According to police, the perpetrator smears excriment on the walls and floors of carriages. Due to the potentially serious public health risk, dozens of trains have had to be cancelled leaving thousands of commuters stranded and costing train operators £60,000 in cleaning costs. According to Sea Containers, there is no danger of a collapse at GNER however. Eurostar also reports sales revenue increased by 21% in the last 3 months. Eurostar is owned by a consortium which includes UK train operators Virgin Group and National Express along with airline British Airways. Network operator Network Rail is preparing for the autumn leaf fall season with a top notch super soakers - hugh train hauled pressure washes which blast leaf fall from tracks.
